In the Tibetan tradition sometimes the whole Buddha statue is painted -see the lifesize statue of the
Green Tara above- but on smaller, bronze statues in general only the face is painted, using pure gold.
This is called the 'Eye Opening Ceremony' and takes place on a, for Buddhists, special and auspicious
day like a full moon. On this page you'll see some examples of statue painting.

Padmasambhava (Tib.: Guru Rinpoche) statue - painting of the face The face of this Padmasambhava statue on the pictures above is painted in the traditional way with pure gold and tiny brushes.

Lama Tsong Khapa statue - painting of the face This was quite a roughly made statue with unbalanced features and therefore a challenge to make the face appear more balanced.

Vajrayogini statue - painting of the face A good example of how a painted facial expression has brought this Vajrayogini much more charisma.

Green Tara statue - restoration & painting This small Green Tara statue was damaged by fire; she's had a true make over!

                Beschilderen en vergulden van Boeddhabeelden
             Volgens traditie wordt soms het hele beeld beschilderd, maar meestal alleen het gezicht, met puur goud.
             Dit wordt de 'Eye Opening'-Ceremonie genoemd en vindt plaats op een, voor boeddhisten, speciale en

                 het gezicht gelijkmatig te doen lijken.
